Growing Up With David Nixon: “Big Ideas”
Recently, when David Nixon was interviewed by renowned television news presenter and reporter Amber Sherlock of TV’s Nine News, Ms. Sherlock asked him what “big ideas” he wanted readers to take away from his book, Growing Up! Unleash Your Business Growth. David is known as Australia’s Authority on Unleashing Growth Barriers for SMEs.
“Well, one of the big things” David said, “and it’s certainly a growth barrier, is taking time to work on your business versus working in your business.”
“This is one of the issues I find across all businesses,” David said. “Every small business has growth barriers, whether it be struggling with technology, struggling with resources, struggling with the marketplace you’re actually working in—and they’re easily identified.
“Most business owners are familiar with the top four or five key issues, and these are usually just the tip of the iceberg.”
According to David, taking care of the day-to-day, often obscures serious operational issues that don’t get addressed because the business owner is so busy working in the business that they fail to work on it.
Whether it’s the inability to create a forward-looking culture of innovation within the company, not understanding how technology can best meet your goals or one of a thousand other reasons, know that you’re in good company—it happens to the best of them.
Sometimes it can be hard to get an accurate handle on the true state of your productivity and efficiency when you’re in a growth phase because the positives of getting more clients and achieving more business,” David says. “With growth phase plateaus, you can be left in a precarious situation if you haven’t been paying attention to how things have been evolving in your organisation.”
